Playa el Caimanero is a beautiful unspoiled Sinaloa beach not far south of Mazatlan, and a terrific destination for a day trip. This beach paradise provides breathtaking tranquility most days of the year. On weekends and holidays this beach becomes very popular with Mexican families, and you may have to share paradise, but that only assures more vendors of really great stuff to eat!

There are two ways to drive from Mazatlan to Playa el Caimanero -- the shorter coastal route is just 41 miles, the slightly longer inland route takes you through El Rosario -- but either way, you won't be disappointed!

If you want to get off the Caimanero beach, directly inland there are two very large lagoons -- which are really one extended body of water covering over 45,000 acres -- Laguna el Caimanero and, to the north, Laguna Huizache.

These beautiful coastal lagoons are only slightly inland, and offer freshwater swimming, fishing and some really great bird watching -- they are home to over 20,000 shorebirds comprised of over 20 species!



Playa el Caimanero Day Trip Directions

There are two ways to drive to Playa Caimanero from Mazatlan: The Short Route has you cut off Highway 15 at Villa Union, and is 41 miles. The Longer Route has you stay on Highway 15 until you reach El Rosario. This route is about 61 miles.

Short Route (41 Miles) To begin Mazatlan day trips to Playa Caimanero head southeast on Highway 15 to Villa Union, which is about 13 miles. Turn right on to the local road to El Walamo and follow that road along the coast for 28 miles and you will be at the Playa Caimanero beach.

Longer Route (61 Miles) Head southeast on Highway 15 to El Rosario, which is about 41 miles. Turn right on to the local road to Nieblas and follow that road southwest -- through Nieblas -- for about 20 miles and you will be at the Playa el Caimanero beach.

• It is worth noting that the entire loop is just 102 miles, so a visit to the beach and a brief visit to El Rosario can comfortably be accomplished in one day.

• It is also worth noting that both routes take you through Villa Union, home of Cuchupetas Restaurant where they serve some of the finest seafood anywhere in the world!
