Everyone knows about the cliff divers of La Quebrada, but Acapulco isn't the only place famous for the sport of cliff diving.
Mazatlan has its own diving tradition centered in a small oceanside park on the Malecon officially named Parque Glorieta Rodolfo Sanchez Taboada.
The spot is usually referred to as "El Clavadista" by Mazatlecos -- "clavadista" meaning cliff diver -- and the jumps are from a nearly 50' high platform into water that is just a few feet deep.
Our divers must time their jumps perfectly to take advantage of the slightly greater water depth afforded by incoming waves, and other cliff divers help the diver who is jumping time his leap, with several often watching from both the base of the platform as well as beside him at the top.

The tradition of cliff diving in Mazatlan dates from the mid 1900s when the platform that is still used today was constructed on the Malecon just north of Olas Altas Beach.
The first brave diver to use the diving platform was reputedly Mario Gonzalez Agilar -- who reportedly performed his first dive on a bet!
One of the more exciting of our tourist attractions, Mazatlan cliff divers often jump several times a day. While the Pearl of The Pacific cliff diving performances do not have a set schedule, Mazatlan cliff dives usually begin around noon and continue until late in the afternoon, with the late afternoon dives being a great way to prepare for an evening in the Centro Historico or a fine way to cap a day of sightseeing.

The timing of a cliff dive is everything -- at times the water is only six feet deep.
An exciting Mazatlan City Guide favorite, and its free if you don't choose to tip.
Respectful Advice: choose to tip, this is highly skilled and really dangerous entertainment you're enjoying.
