Bird Island (Isla de Pajaros) is even closer to the beach than its sister islands Deer Island (Isla de Venados) and Goat Island (Isla de Chivos) -- it is little more than 2000' at the closest point from the beach in front of La Costa Marinera restaurant in the Golden Zone -- but when you step on to Bird Island you are in a different universe! Bird Island is the northern-most (to your right as you view them from the shore) of the islands that form the Reserva Ecologica Islas de Mazatlan -- an ecological reserve created in 1991 and known worldwide -- and is completely protected from development, as are Deer and Goat islands.
Bird Island is one of the most pristine places that can be accessed on a Mazatlan day trip. Restricted tourism that limits human impact on the island ecosystem has preserved a pristine sanctuary that makes for delightful day trips!
As can be clearly seen on the satelite map image displayed below, there are only two small beaches on the eastern side of the island where boats and kayaks can land.
At a bit more than 120 acres Bird Island is quite small, made of volcanic rock, and the terrain is very steep, this small space rising to nearly 400 feet above sea level.
Forays inland would be quite a challenge -- even for very fit and experienced hikers -- but they basically are not allowed.
The sights from the edges of the island that can be accessed are worth the journey: Bird Island is home to large colonies of seals and, obviously -- many species of native birds including pelicans, seagulls, swallows and ducks.
