If you want to dine on truly traditional wood-grilled Sinaloa meats, try Restaurante el Huizachal!

El Huizachal is a popular meat-eaters paradise serving a wide range of locally raised beef, pork, chicken, shrimp and lamb (a house specialty) -- all slowly cooked over a deliciously smokey mesquite wood fire. A range of sides and desserts are offered, including a particularly frequently recommended bean soup.

Restaurante el Huizachal is located on the Via Libre (non-toll) part of Mexico Highway 15 just north of Mazatlan -- it's on the road that you take to El Quelite.

El Meson de Los Laureanos Restaurant in El Quelite, Sinaloa
Information and reviews of recommended restaurants in Rural Sinaloa Mexico

Restaurant El Meson de Los Laureanos in El Quelite, Sinaloa, is a true gem, and one of the most popular restaurants near Mazatlan both for day-trippers and those who are willing to make the short drive to have a wonderful meal in a beautiful Rural Sinaloa setting.

Owned by Dr. Marcos Osuna -- who many consider to be the father of rural tourism in the State of Sinaloa -- El Meson de Los Laureanos is housed the the spectacularly restored Osuna family home. The house features numerous beautifully decorated interior dining rooms, as well as its most popular dining space: the large shady walled courtyard with its pet tropical birds.

Video of El Meson de Los Laureanos

El Meson de Los Laureanos' menu is extensive, and offers a very wide variety of delicious traditional ranch-style Sinaloan dishes. Somewhat unusual for near-coastal Sinaloa, the restaurant does not serve seafood.

Virtually all of the ingredients in a El Meson de Los Laureanos meal are locally produced, including fresh artisan cheeses, cream and butter; traditional hand made chunky salsa with roasted local tomatos; and a wide array of wonderfully prepared tender meat entrees including shredded beef, tender locally raised broiled lamb and pork dishes served with fresh roasted vegetables, quail, and one of the specialties of the house: cow tongue.

There are many side dishes to choose from like refried beans with crumbled cow cheese, whole grilled onions, and nopales, a sweet type of cactus.

El Meson de Los Laureanos also serves some tasty non-traditional dishes like Mexican pizza, which is based upon the traditional toasted corn tortilla topped with salsa and cheese, but adds savory pork and other delicious ingredients.

Despite all of this sumptuous food and spectactlar decor, the consistently top rated El Meson de Los Laureanos is modestly priced. There is a full bar and a selection of fine wines and spirits. The restaurant is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner every day, and Dr. Osuna is virtually always there.

El Meson de Los Laureanos is one of the most consistently recommended restaurants outside Mazatlan, and information about this delicious 2017 Mazatlan Restaurant Guide recommended El Quelite restaurant can be found at the restaurants' website, elmesondeloslaureanos.com

Sinaloa, Mexico

El Cuchupetas Restaurant in Villa Union, Sinaloa
Information and reviews of recommended restaurants in Rural Sinaloa Mexico

The ALWAYS top rated Restaurante El Cuchupetas in Villa Union, Sinaloa, is spectacular seafood restaurant located only miles beyond the Mazatlan airport.

Opened in 1987 by Manuel Sánchez Villalpando as just a tiny hole-in-the-wall with only one table where he served ceviche, shrimp and crab, Cuchupetas has grown to encompass a series of dining rooms that link formerly separate buildings; extend across the street where the main kitchen is located; and that regularly serves not only a veritable who's-who of Mazatlan society, but famous visitors from around the world.

Cuchupetas has many virtues: it's simple, unpretentious, immaculately clean, offers great service and is modestly priced, with few entrees over 10 USD.

But the secret of its popularity is simply superior seafood.

Despite the fact that in its present incarnation the restaurant can accommodate 300 diners it is often packed, with customers patiently waiting in line to be seated.

Be forewarned: while it is sometimes possible to walk into Cuchupetas for weekday lunch or at off-hours, on weekends and evenings it is often full, and reservations -- especially for larger parties -- are definitely recommended.

The range of seafood choices at Cuchupetas is truly astounding, with over 40 regular menu items and occasional specials. Care for:

Pescado Zarandeado (chile, garlic and mayonnaise basted grilled fish)? Langostino a la Cuchupetas (grilled jumbo shrimp)? Breaded Dorado? Estufado de Aleta de Atun (a stew made with yellowfin tuna)? Brochetas de Camaron y Filete (shrimp and dorado kebabs)? Tacos Gobernador (seafood tacos stuffed with marlin and shrimp)? Grilled Garlic Shrimp? Ostiones a la Cuchupetas (specially prepared Oysters)?

The range of flavors is astounding, and makes large group tapas-style dining a kaleidoscopic taste treat!

Mariscos El Cuchupetas in Villa Union is open from 9am until 7pm every day. A wide range of alcohol and non-alcohol drinks are served. Parking is available at an inexpensive large and safe lot directly across the street. Cash only.

Note: If you don't want to make a special trip to Villa Union to dine at Cuchupetas -- which is a mistake, because it's always worth a special trip to eat at Cuchupetas, but anyway -- be aware that you have to pass through Villa Union if you take a day trip to El Rosario, Playa el Caimanero, Concordia, Copala or Teacapan.

Just sayin'...
