Airliner landing at the Mazatlan airportAbout the Mazatlan
International Airport

The Mazatlan airport, General Rafael Buelna Aeropuerto Internacional, is located just twenty minutes southeast of town, and offers the amenities of a larger airport -- all at human scale. The modern Mazatlan airport is served by a number of airlines and airline flights to Mazatlan are available from a number of cities in the United States and Canada, as well as major cities within Mexico.

Operated by OMA (Grupo Aeroporuario Centro Norte), General Rafael Buelna Aeropuerto Internacional (MZT / MMMZ) is first in international airline flights in Sinaloa State.

The airport serves international, domestic and charter flights; has four jetways, two concourses and four baggage claim carousels; accommodated nearly 750,000 airline passengers in 2013; operates 24-hours; has free WiFi (for 10 minutes before there is a charge); ATM machines; handicap accessible bathrooms; a food court which includes Medas restaurant offering breakfast, lunch and snacks; a Carl’s Junior and Bing Ice Cream -- and offers duty free shopping as well as an art gallery!

The Mazatlan International Airport plays a very important role in Mexican aviation, as it is one of only four area / regional control centers (the others being Mexico City International Airport, Monterrey International Airport and Merida International Airport) that direct airline traffic over broad parts of Mexico -- in the case of Mazatlan, the northwest part of the country.

The airport terminal has numerous auto rental agencies including Alamo, Budget, Europcar, Hertz and National, and cars can be rented at pretty much any hour that there are arriving flights.

Taxi's and buses serve the airport at all hours, and secure long term parking at the airport is available for under 100 pesos per day.

If you do park at the airport, remember to pay your parking ticket on your way out of the airport terminal: your ticket has a magentic stripe that needs to be validated -- it is an automated gate as you exit, there is no booth or parking lot attendant.

If you don't have a car in the airport parking lot waiting full of friends, you can get into the city either by bus or by yellow airport taxi.

Mazatlan airport buses leave the terminal regularly for various locations for under 50 pesos per person, but usually only after a flight has come in, or if there are a number of passengers.

The buses drop you off at your hotel or, possibly with negotiation, at pretty much any address you give them. Tickets for the airport buses can be purchased inside the terminal near the baggage claim area.

Only yellow Mazatlan airport taxis are allowed to carry passengers from the Mazatlan airport, and tickets can be purchased within the airport, which should avoid possible disagreements about the taxi fare.

Mazatlan airport news updates (December 2014)

The Mazatlan airport has been expanded and modernized! A 7 million dollar construction project begun in early 2014 has added nearly 25,000 square feet of floor space, expanding the size of the terminal by roughly 20%.

The 2014 renovation of Rafael Buelna International includes improved luggage handling capabilities; a new waiting room; a luxury VIP passenger lounge; digital arrival and departure boards and improvements to the airport parking facilities.
