Mazatlan Mexico shopping stores services informationShopping in Mazatlan offers most of the options that Americans and Canadians know from home. Mazatlan supermarkets offer many of the products that you are used to, and the Mazatlan Walmart, Sam's Club, Home Depot, Office Max and Office Depot are -- of course -- the same businesses, with largely the same range of products as in the United States or Canada.

Beyond these north-of-the-border favorites, Mazatlan shopping options include large and well-stocked grocery, home furnishing, construction supply, hardware and paint stores that will please even the most discriminating American and Canadian visitors.

Shopping in Mazatlan also offers many of the luxury goods that Americans and Canadians crave including Mazatlan shopping bargains on Mexican luxury products, such as Taxco silver jewelry (the finest silver jewelry on the planet); Mexican furniture and Mexican liquors, spirits, and fine wines.

If you're shopping in Mazatlan for entertainment, The Pearl of The Pacific offers numerous opportunities to golf, fish, take a city tour, enjoy surfing and other water sports, ride horses, visit a spa, or have a fabulous makeover done at a salon!

If you are experieced at shopping in Mazatlan and have a favorite store or service that isn't on our list and would like to suggest that we include it in our shopping and services directory, please email contact@mazatlantoday.net

Grocery shopping in Mazatlan can be as much entertainment as it is a practical, nutritious and healthy activity and -- for American, Canadian and European visitors -- the prices of quality foods in Mazatlan are really low!

  • Click here to download over 150 names of food in Spanish!

Don't be intimidated by the language! Many Mazatlan food sellers speak at least a little English -- like names of foods. You can also review our list of over 150 names of food in Spanish at the bottom of this section on grocery shopping (or read and download the printable .pdf here -- it makes a perfect "cheat sheet" for shopping trips!) so that you can awe and impress both the people at the grocery store and your friends.

About the food and the stores and markets where you buy it

Seafood of all types is -- as would be expected in Pacific Mexico's premier fishing port -- outstanding, and virtually all fish sold in Mazatlan is extremely fresh. Fruits and vegetables sold in the markets and stores are usually locally grown, fresh and often considered "exotic" and "gourmet" produce in the United States and Canada -- especially in the winter! Most the delicious meat sold in Mazatlan is butchered locally from Sinaloa-raised animals -- and is generally of very high quality.

Imported foods are, as expected, somewhat more expensive at Pearl of The Pacific grocery stores than Canadians and Americans are used to back home. The widest selection of imported food is within the grocery departments of Sam's Club and Walmart.

The smallest Mazatlan food stores are called "Abarrotes", and there are a great number of them scattered throughout most neighborhoods. These small grocery stores offer a nice to shop for dry goods, bread -- often locally baked -- and usually a limited selection of fresh produce.

The next larger size grocery store -- usually referred to as a "Super" -- will offer a wider range of food products including more refrigerated items, and usually beer and / or liquor.

Mazatlan also offers full-blown supermarkets like the Ley, Mega, and Soriana stores listed below, as well as the extensive grocery sections of our Sam's Club and Walmart stores which certainly qualify as supermarkets.

Don't forget the classic gem of local grocery shopping: the fantastic block-square Mercado Pino Suarez in El Centro which offers absolutely every kind of fresh Mexican food you can dream of!

It is worth noting that there has been a trend toward more organic food sellers and markets in Mazatlan in recent years, and organically raised and grown foods are fairly easy to find now.

It is also worth noting that -- whether "certifiably" organic or not -- most food locally grown / raised in Sinaloa State has far fewer chemicals, hormones, etc than produce and meat commonly sold in the United States and Canada simply because, for the most part, agriculture is less "industrial" in Mexico.

El Pollito De la Nena Delicatessen
Info about buying organic chicken in Mazatlan

El Pollito De la Nena Delicatessen in Mazatlan specializes in selling chemical-free, grain-fed organic chicken. Everything about this deli revolves around chicken -- a Chicken Deli!

And what to cook with or put on your fresh organic chicken? -- El Pollito is packed with delicious fresh chutneys, satays, moles, salsas and spices.

This deli / grocery store also sells a wide range of frozen home made chicken treats like fresh chicken broth; chicken lasagne; breaded organic chicken nuggets and chicken meatballs.

    Ley Supermercado
Info about Ley supermarkets in Mazatlan

Ley is Mexico's largest supermarket chain. Most of its grocery stores are located in western Mexico states like Sinaloa.

There are four Ley supermarket locations in Mazatlan Mexico. The Ley supermarket location listed below is the largest and best of the Ley grocery stores in Mazatlan.

Ley's are big places, and don't generally cater specifically to non-Mexicans. Ley often has the best prices in town, especially for Mexican-produced foods -- and not all of the groceries they carry are the usual packaged food products.

Like other major supermarkets in Mexico, Ley's offer a number of other services and amenities like cash machines, the ability to re-charge cell phones, and often to pay common local bills such as water, electric and Telcel land line telephone bills.

Some of the Mazatlan Ley food products are distinctly local. If you want a taste treat when grocery shopping, see if the Ley you're visiting has mild green Chiles Escabeche -- chiles stuffed with marinated tuna, and cooked in spices and vinegar.

Delicious -- and quite different from what you'd find to snack on in supermarkets in the United States and Canada!

Because of the Costco connection, Mega sells a number of imported trademark United States products -- particularly food items -- that are difficult or impossible to find elsewhere in Mazatlan.

Mega has an extensive liquor and wine department.

Like other major supermarkets in Mexico, Mega offers a number of other services and amenities like cash machines, the ability to re-charge cell phones, and often to pay common local bills such as water, electric and Telcel land line telephone bills.

Many people consider Mega to be the best supermarket / grocery store in Mazatlan because of its extensive selections of imported cheeses, wines and regional artisan gourmet foods.

Mazatlan wine dealers and liquor stores information Buying beer, tequila, imported spirits and wine

Castell de Vino | Cava del Duero | Hacienda Reynaud | Onilikan | Soul & Spirit Ventures

Buying beer, wine, tequila and liquor in Mazatlan is pretty much like buying it in Canada or the United States, but here are a few tips:

  • Apart from the fine wine and liquor stores listed below, some of the best selections of wine and spirits in Mazatlan are found within the largest supermarkets and big-box retailers. Particularly highly recommended are the liquor departments of Mega, Sam's Club and Walmart are all extensive, very competitively priced and accept credit cards.

  • A store that sells only beer is referred to as Deposito (Dee-poh-see-toe). The origin of the name is that you will pay a deposit for most bottled beer (see below). There are a very large number of Depositos in Mazatlan. The hour has fluctuated over the years, but Depositos presently cannot sell beer after 9:00pm.

  • Mexican beer is sold in both cans and bottles and -- with a few exceptions -- when you buy bottled beer you are charged a deposit, which is not small. Remember to save your bottles -- your second beer purchase will cost substantially less than the first!

  • Beer can be purchased less expensively in larger bottles -- usually 1 liter, roughly equivalent to a quart -- that are called Ballenas (Buy-yay-nahs), which means "Whale". A 20% larger bottle (1.2 liter) is called a Ballenon (Buy-ehn-non), and the "Big Whale" costs only a peso or two more than a Ballena.

  • The clear home-town favorite beer in Mazatlan is Pacifico, a fine Pilsner that is intimately associated with Mazatlan because it was first brewed here by German immigrants at the turn of the 20th Century. If you are interested in how Pacifico is made it is easy to arrange a tour of the brewery.

  • Spirits -- other than tequila -- are usually more expensive than in the United States or Canada. A full blow liquor store in Mazatlan is called a Liquoria (Lee-core-ee-ah), and will almost certainly be the only place you see wine being sold outside the larger supermarkets which sell beer, wine, tequila and other imported spirits.

  • Slightly larger than Depositos -- and with a wider range of non-alcohol products -- stores called Expendios also sell beer and, in some cases, tequila and other spirits.

  • A note to Spring-breakers and younger looking people: The drinking age in Mazatlan is 18, and liquor stores, Depositos and bars can get in serious trouble for selling alcohol to minors. Just as in Canada or the United States, carry identification!
